Statins can lower LDL when diet isn't enough
Q. I have been on different statins for the past 15 years. The other day a doctor on a radio show said these pills are unnecessary. All one has to do is rid their diet of trans fatty acids. Is there any truth to this? It's true that getting rid of excess saturated and trans fats in your diet is the first line of defense against the rise of dangerous LDL cholesterol in your blood. But saying medications are never necessary is like saying your car will never need a tune-up if you change the oil regularly. For some people, diet changes are not enough. That's when statins -- cholesterol-lowering medications such as Lipitor, Zocor and Lescol -- can help. Too much vitamin D? Q. I take a multivitamin and a calcium supplement daily. I mistakenly purchased calcium plus D.
Bredesen Launches Campaign To Promote Healthier Lifestyle
Gov. Phil Bredesen has launched a new health and wellness awareness campaign, GetFitTN, aimed at the prevention of Type 2 diabetes, commonly known as adult onset diabetes, and to promote healthier, more active lifestyles among Tennesseans. At its roots, GetFitTN is an opportunity for all Tennesseans to improve their lifestyles by making a modest increase in physical activity - regardless of age, social status, race or ethnic background, said Gov. Bredesen. To have a real impact on the health and the quality of life of future generations of Tennesseans, we must address Type 2 diabetes now and some of the risk factors that lead to it, like obesity and inactivity. Im pleased to have Eddie George driving this initiative to encourage all Tennesseans to get fit. Former Tennessee Titan All-Pro running back and Heisman Trophy winner, Eddie George, has joined Bredesens TeamTN as the spokesperson for GetFitTN.
Dry Skin Care Gets a Boost from Almonds
Many people are aware of the nutrient value of almonds. Health food stores and even some grocery stores now carry almond milk as a substitute for dairy and its use is becoming more common in skin care lotions and cleansers. However, in addition to the beneficial almond-derived ingredients, most of these commercial products also contain harsh and harmful chemicals. An easy solution to this problem is to make your own almond products at home and add them to your basic dry skin care routine. What are the benefits of almonds? In addition to being an excellent source of protein, calcium, copper, phosphorus, iron, vitamin B1, niacin and other B vitamins, they have a high fat content that replenishes the skins natural oils. Like olive oil, the fat is good fat - unsaturated oils very high in linolenic acid that is especially beneficial for dry skin care.
